Bleeding Star Chronicles #11, The Sounds of Wind and Water, wasn't the easiest book for me to write, at least certain parts of it. It deals with some pretty heavy issues, one of which is human trafficking. That subject is only touched on really- but I think I delve deep enough into the matter to make my readers think about it, and realize what a nightmare this kind of life can truly be.
Human trafficking remains a real problem in our world today. Even here in the United States and other 1st world countries, there is a dark subculture that grooms young people, especially young girls, as sexual slaves. You only have to do a little research on this subject, here's the Wikipedia page, to see I'm telling the truth. Overseas, the problem is even bigger.
I've personally cared for rape victims as young as six years old who were already far into the process of being groomed for a life of sexual slavery and prostitution. The work was heartbreaking, but necessary, and opened up my eyes to the existential presence of evil in this world as nothing had before.
So, what's all this have to do with Bleeding Star Chronicles? As a writer, subjects such as these are often difficult to tackle. This isn't the stuff that's fun to write about, but it's important for all of us to be aware of and think about.
Evil exists in this world, sometimes right under our noses, and we often forget how blessed we are.
All of us are faced with a number of choices each and every day.
We need to choose to be thankful!
We need to choose to be kind to others!
We need to choose to reach out to those around us, and alleviate human suffering. Sometimes this suffering is obvious, and sometimes it's not, but one thing's for sure- there are plenty of people suffering all around us.
Writing stories about this stuff is easy. Reading stories about it is even easier.
Choosing to do something about it- that can be a whole lot harder.
